How To Tune A Drum

Ok, so I've had a TON of requests to do a few lessons on drum tuning. This is an area that I'm no expert in by any means. It's also a personal area of drumming...every drummer has their own sound and should strive to find their voice. That being said, I've found a few things over the years that help me achieve a good sound quickly...so that's what I thought I'd share with you. Feel free to throw your comments in as well!

Too funny, I have seen many presentations on drum tuning and usually the first thing they say is "I am no expert" and it is so true. I think you can get really good and maybe even teach it but expert......
I might say John Good from DW would be considered one but he is all I am aware of. Anyway, you still put on a good demo....even if you aren't an "expert". ;-) Thanks JW

Lol, tuning is funny to me...it seems everyone is nervous about it (as am I at times). It think the problem is that we don't have a set note to tune to (say, middle C). If we did, everyone would be an expert at it. I've never met a guitarist that, once they learned how to tune, couldn't tune to a given note. But drums...it's a constant source of stress. The sound man says they're tuned badly, the producer loves it, your guitarist is gonna kill you over the sound, your bass player thinks you're a God...and none of us know why. I've been avoiding this topic for over a year...so I threw my two cents in after people asked enough. Still think there's MUCH better info out there on tuning than what I can give.

Thanks for throwin' your two cents in JW!
